Excellence in Growth
How Excellent is Thy Name!
Psalm 8:1
God isn’t just Good--- He’s Excellent!
The Greater King David Baptist Church’s theme for 2008 is “Excellence in
Growth”.
In other words, growth in God’s way- demonstrated by Jesus’ life, and manifested by Christian living.
Our journey began in January, by recognizing and acknowledging that change in every aspect
of life is inevitable- whether we are ready for it, or resist it. Those who are the most successful are
those who either anticipate change or embrace it; for nothing shall remain the same- save God’s word.
In February, God’s vision for Greater King David was shared with the membership present dur-
ing our annual conference. We began with the organizational structure of the church, divine appoint-
ments and expansion in ministerial opportunities (or opportunities to meet needs). For the bible says,
“Let all things be done decently and in order”. As a result, we are experiencing an overwhelming re-
sponse by members who desire to share and use their God-given talents in God’s service and for the
advancement of God’s agenda with the birth of new, innovative and necessary ministries. I urge each
member to pray and seek God for what area(s) He desires to use you. It’s been said that if you have
your tools ready, God will find you work; and if you know not that you can do great things, do small
things in a great way- but do it all for the Glory of God.
This month our focus is on the importance of praying and fasting, as we seek to arrest God’s
attention and journey closer towards achieving Excellence in Growth. The bible says, “Man should
always pray”, and the teachings of Jesus will show us the way. Jesus gives the disciples (us) an ex-
ample of a model prayer beginning Matthew 6:9; but for the rebuking of the devil and casting out de-
mons, Jesus says in Matthew 17:21. “…. this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.”
As a church family, we will be praying and fasting for the pouring out, receiving of, and the op-
erating in the gifts of God for God’s glory and our good individually and collectively as a family of be-
lievers.
As you know, nothing of this world is guaranteed, except that which God has said. I get excited
about God’s word because they are His guarantees. “For I know the plans I have for you,” said the
Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then, you will
call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek and find Me when
you seek Me with all your heart …..”
Through His word, God has given us instructions for good success in every aspect of life. He
has provided the roadmap for the journey and the keys to unlock the doors of opportunity along the
way, for ourselves and for others. However, with every opportunity comes responsibility!

LOOK TO JESUS
We people have been looking everywhere in life for answers to so many questions. But it is
time for all of us to start looking to the Author and Finishers of our faith, Jesus. JESUS
SAVES!
The Bible tells us to, “LOOK TO JESUS, the Savior of the World (Luke 2:11). Don’t look at
your sinful condition. LOOK TO JESUS; don’t look at your hopelessness, frustration and be-
wilderment, LOOK TO JESUS. Don’t look at your sickness, grief and loneliness, LOOK TO
JESUS. Don’t look at your friends or other Christians who have failed, but LOOK TO JESUS
who never fails.
The Bible says in Isaiah 45:22, “Look unto me and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for
I am God and there is NONE else.”
There is only one way to be saved and that is through Jesus Christ, the son of the Living
God.
Jesus said in (John 14:6), “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, no man cometh unto the Fa-
ther but by me.” Jesus said in (John 10:9), “I am the Door: by me if any man enters in, he
shall be SAVED, and shall go in and out and find pasture.” THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY TO
GO - that way is JESUS. There is only one door to God, and that door is Jesus. There is
no other.
Jesus is the only One to open the doors to the Kingdom of Heaven, the one who came from
heaven, who died on the Cross, rose again from the dead - He is able to forgive you, save
you and bring you into the Kingdom of God. GLORY TO HIS NAME FOREVER.
REPENT OF YOUR SINS
YOU MUST CONFESS YOUR SINS TO GOD
YOU MUST ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR SAVIOR
To all of the Believers let us “GO” according to Matthew 28:19-20. We are going to seek
and to save just as Jesus did. It’s not hard read 1 John 5:10, “He that believeth on the Son
of God hath the witness in himself : he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; be-
cause he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. It’s not hard in fact it is
very simple All TRUE BELIEVERS HAVE THE WITNESS IN HIMSELF “GO” and tell the
world that Jesus saves. You ask me how I know He lives, He lives within my heart.

s the war in Iraq continues, it is good to know that one
of our own is back home safe. Brother Romy Smith, a
member of our ministerial staff, current city policeman,
is also a captain in the 1190 th Deployment Support
Brigade of the United States Army Reserve.
Prior to being shipped to Iraq, Captain Smith served as team
chief to a unit that had to be trained for any and all types of
situations imaginable in Iraq. Inspecting and processing all
equipment was also some of the duties that he was responsi-
ble for. Once in Iraq, Brother Smith worked in military logistics
while his unit was dispersed to other parts of the Middle East.
Far from home, Brother Smith had to deal with being sepa-
rated from his family and friends which he cherishes. Before
the deployment, Brother Smith had to perform what he con-
sidered one of the most difficult tasks ever. He drafted a living
will which covered every thing that could be imagined. After
sealing up the will, he gave it to his grandmother with verbal
instructions that it only be opened in the event of his death. At
that time, emotions between he and his grandmother reached
a level that touched both of them deeply.
Having to put on the full Armor of God, once he was
settled in Iraq, Brother Smith revealed that the numer-
ous cell phones calls from close family members, Pas-
tor Montgomery, Brothers and Sisters of Greater King
David helped ease the mental stress that weighed
heavily on his shoulders. But, what stood out foremost
in his reflections was the care package from our home
ministry. He credits the cassettes from our tape minis-
try, a copy of the “Gospel Truth,” and thanks Sister
Hitchens for his favorite candy, “Skittles.” All of these
things along with daily prayers enabled him to return
home safe.
Psalms 121:8 says, “The Lord will watch over your
coming and going both now and forever more.” No
longer in harm’s way over seas, Brother Smith has
been reassigned to new military duties that should
keep him state side throughout the remainder of his
tour of duty. But, if he is once again required to be in
danger, he knows the Lord of Hosts will guide and pro-
tect him as he always has.

On Saturday, May 31 st , the GKD family participated in
our Health Fair where we participated in Gospel Aero-
bics, Diabetes Screening, abstinence workshops for
teens, self defense classes and much, much more. Jua-
nita Spann, Carla Harmon and Dr. Steven Kelly along
with their committee members did an excellent job with
coordinating an informative and health conscious filled
event for the GKD family.
Our Family Day Celebration followed in conjunction with
the Health Fair and began at 11 am. Although the heat
was apparent, we had a wonderful time.
One of the highlights of Family Day was the dunking
booth. Greg and Jason Jones and Miles Portier were
great sports and served as our dunkees that day. Need-
less to say, all three of them got dunked over and over
and over again.
We also had games for senior saints and many activities
for children and adults including rock climbing, space
walk, face painting, fire truck and ambulance tours, safe
house provided by Entergy, popcorn and snowballs. We
even had live evangelism provided by Rev. Carolyn Fos-
ter.
We culminated our celebration on Sunday, June 1 st at all
three services. Rev. Jeffrey P. Kee, Pastor
of_Columbus, Ohio gave us a powerful word from God.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOUR CREDIT SCORE
When you apply for credit - whether it’s a credit card, a car loan, a personal loan or a mortgage - lenders want to know your
credit risk level. In other words, “If I give this person a loan or credit card, how likely is it that I will get paid back on time?” To
estimate your risk level, most lenders today will check your credit score.
Your score helps a lender decide whether to offer you credit and at what terms, such as interest rate and loan size. Lenders
also use these scores with established customers to decide, for example, whether to increase your credit card limit. So your
score really is a vital part of your credit health.
Where Credit Scores Come From
Credit scores are sold to lenders by each of the three major credit reporting agencies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.
Each score is based on information in your credit report, which includes all the raw information reported by lenders about your
current and past credit accounts. As the information changes on your credit report, your score will change too. To calculate
your score, the credit reporting agency runs your credit report information through a complex mathematical formula, resulting
in a score.
The most widely used credit scores are called FICO scores. FICO is shorthand for the name of the company, Fair Isaac Cor-
poration that pioneered credit scoring and invented the FICO score formula. FICO scores range between 300 and 850 - the
higher your score, the lower the risk. Each of the three credit reporting agencies likely has different information on file about
you, which means your scores will often be at least a little different.
What Changes Your Score
FICO scores consider both positive and negative information in five areas:
 Your payment history on credit accounts
 How much you owe creditors
 How long you have had credit
 How many accounts you have opened or applied for recently
Types of credit you have had
Credit scores do NOT consider your race, color, religion, national origin, sex or marital status. They also ignore your age,
income, occupation, where you live, child or family support obligations, any rental agreements, whether you are seeing a
credit counselor, and other personal factors.
Getting a Good Score
To get a good score, first make sure the information in your credit report is accurate. It’s a good idea to check your credit re-
port for free once a year from all three credit reporting agencies at: www.annualcreditreport.com
or by calling toll-free 1-877-322-8228. By following three simple rules you can protect a good credit score or improve a low
score.
 Pay your bills on time. The longer you pay your bills on time, the better your credit score.
 Keep balances low on credit cards, retail accounts and other types of revolving credit. An effective way to improve your
credit score is to pay down any high credit card balances.
Only take on a new credit when you really, truly need it.

lower lung. A biopsy was performed confirming a diagno-

As the disease progressed, signs and symptoms became
